US Migration Patterns by State - Altas Van Lines Study

Atlas Van Lines released a study providing insight into where Americans are moving based on traffic flows. They categorized states into Inbound, Outbound and Balanced using the number of shipments in/out of the state as the criteria. For example, a state was considered InBound if more that 55% of the total shipments for that state were inbound, OutBound if more than 55% of shipments were out of the state and Balanced if shipments in and out of the state were both below 55%.

Nevada, the Northwest, DC, Maine, Rhode Island and parts of the South were the places Americans are moving to while the Northeast, Rust Belt, Great Plains and Hawaii are where Americans are leaving.

The states with the highest Inbound and Outbound ratios is shown below. Idaho had the highest Inbound ratio at 65.1% and Illinois was the highest Outbound with 62.4%.

The study also provides a historical perspective showing Ohio and Indiana as states being in the Outbound category for ten years. Atlas also pointed out that, "New York remains outbound for more than 20 years running."

The study may point out where there will be a need for more new homes to be built as well as where more house flipping will be needed as populations move around the country.
